Catholics Come Out in Support of Girl Scouts, #GodLovestheGirlScouts
“These are exactly the type of young women needed in the Church today.”
May 15, 2012. As Catholic organizations we congratulate the Girl Scouts on their 100th year anniversary and thank them for modeling the best of what girls can be: strong, bold, value-based young women. What a shame that Catholic officials cannot see these young women for the gift they are to the church and world.

There's no doubt about the theme of today's readings. "This is my commandment: love one another as I have loved you." John's entire gospel revolves around that message. Though a simple command, it can create problems. Love often means different things for different people.

Lourdes said that when she ultimately did decide to come out to her mother, who like in most Hispanic families is both the head and the heart of the family, her mother responded with two questions. "She asked me if I was happy, and if I had a relationship with God," said Lourdes. "Those were the things that mattered to her."

In Fr. Donald Cozzens' recent National Catholic Reporter review of Cullen Murphy's God's Jury: The Inquisition and The Making of the Modern World, the former seminary rector mentioned a passing supermarket encounter with an elderly man who looked in his direction and said, "Heretic!" When the well-known author eventually tracked down his accuser in the produce department and demanded to know why he had labeled him a heretic, he discovered, "He didn't like my questioning of mandatory celibacy for diocesan clergy." Hardly heretical material.

One of Rudolph Bultmann's best known quotes is his statement, "After Jesus' death and resurrection, the preacher became the preached." We have an example of this process in today's gospel pericope.
