DignityUSA Townhall - Responding to the Responsum

Last week, the Vatican's Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith issued a responsum, a statement that declared that the Church cannot bless same-sex unions. This statement, which received Pope Francis' approval, came as Bishops in Germany and elsewhere had begun seriously considering allowing priests to bless same-sex couples.

More than 25 national and local media outlets, including 4 from our area, reached out to Dignity for our reaction to the Vatican statement on same-sex blessings. New York chapter spokesperson Jeff Stone and member Kathleen Kane were quoted in Newsday, Jeff appeared in a story on WCBS TV, and DignityUSA Executive Director Marianne Duddy-Burke was quoted in The New York Times and Gay City News. Vatican Statement Denying Blessings to Same-Sex Couples “Exacerbates Pain and Anger” for Gay Catholics says DignityUSA

March 15, 2021 - DignityUSA, the organization of Catholics working for justice, equality, and full inclusion of LGBTQI people in the church and society, is deeply disappointed by the Vatican’s statement unequivocally denying blessings to same-sex couples. It says the statement that God “does not and cannot bless sin” is pastorally harmful and will widen the wedge between Catholics and church leadership.
